چکیده

Introduction: Pt nuggets found in the silicate glass of solubility experiments at low fO2 may be the quench products of Pt in solution in silicate liquid, not mechanical contaminants. Pt solubilities measured in the range of geologically interesting fO2 would then be several orders of magnitude higher than conventionally assumed. Such a finding may remove the perception of "excess" Pt in Earth's mantle. Experimental procedure: We performed experiments on Pt solubility in silicate liquid at 10kb and 1350-1500°C in a piston-cylinder apparatus. The charge was composed of natural basalt or Pt-free

Partitioning of palladium at high pressures and temperatures during core formation

An early equilibration of the Earth’s mantle with the metals that later formed the core may explain the concentrations of ironloving (siderophile) elements in the mantle. However, a subset of these elements, the highly siderophile elements including palladium, are present in greater concentrations than expected. Moreover, their relative ratios are similar to those found in chondrites, that is, ...

Solubility and Structure of Calcium Silicate Hydrate

A poorly crystalline class of calcium silicate hydrates known as C–S–H possesses extensive disorder and structural variations at the nanometer scale. The extent of these variations has generally obscured a comprehensive understanding of the C–S–H nanostructure, but new relationships between solubility and structure appear to shed new light on this old problem. These relationships were inspired ...

Partitioning of Si and O between liquid iron and silicate melt: A two-phase ab-initio molecular dynamics study

[1] The magma ocean process in the early history of the Earth has a great influence on the light element identities and contents of the core which subsequently affect the energy of the geodynamo provided by the compositional convection and the inner core growth through their effect on the phase diagram of iron alloy. In the present work, a twophase ab-initio molecular dynamics method is establi...

Water-melt interaction in hydrous magmatic systems at high temperature and pressure

Experimental data on the structure and properties of melts and fluids relevant to water-melt interaction in hydrous magmatic systems in the Earth's interior have been reviewed. Complex relationships between water solubility in melts and their bulk composition [Al/Si-ratio, metal oxide/(Al + Si) and electron properties of metal cations] explain why water solubility in felsic magmas such as those...
